Our primary mission is to research, create, and bring to life a certified organic caffeine free natural tea for women in Australia and all over the world. To help you understand Menopause better, we have explored its symptoms, causes, and ways in which you can manage it.

What is Menopause?

Menopause marks the beginning of a new phase in a woman's life. During this period, one stops having their periods, and are therefore unable to get pregnant. The onset of Menopause varies from one person to another. Some women start experiencing symptoms in their 40's while others can go as late as 60. Perimenopause refers to the period leading up to Menopause. It is characterized by irregular periods and low levels of estrogen and progesterone hormones. Sometimes it can be difficult for you to tell whether you are at the Perimenopause stage or not, therefore it's important to visit your Gynecologist for diagnosis.

Menopause versus Perimenopause:

When one is at the Perimenopause stage, their periods begin to assume irregular patterns. They might come earlier or later than usual, or go missing for one or two months. Menstrual flow can also be lighter or heavier. Menopause is marked by a full year without menstruating, and the years following after the onset of Menopause are called Postmenopause.

HERBS FOR MENOPAUSE

What are the signs and symptoms associated with Menopause?

Menopause is characterized by an imbalance in natural body hormones. Besides irregular period patterns, the following are other symptoms that are indicators of the onset of Menopause.

  • Reduced fertility. Before the onset of Menopause, estrogen levels begin to drop, reducing a woman's chances of getting pregnant.
  • Vaginal dryness. During Menopause, most women experience Atrophic Vaginitis, which causes thinning, inflammation, and drying of the vagina.
  • Sleep disturbances. It is mainly caused by anxiety, night sweats, and an increased urge to pee.
  • Problems learning and focusing. Almost two-thirds of women in their Menopause stage worldwide experience this problem. Keeping fit and eating healthy can help resolve this issue.
  • Hot flushes. This is a common symptom of Menopause. Most people experience a sudden heat surge in their upper bodies, starting from the chest upwards, which causes sweating and formation of red patches on the skin.
  • Emotional changes. Emotional changes cause depression, irritability, and a low mood. Anyone experiencing a low mood for more than two weeks should see a Doctor for advice.
  • Physical changes. Physical changes that occur during Menopause include a change in hair colour and volume, breast tenderness, increased abdominal fat, and weight gain. However, some of these symptoms might occur independently and might not always be as a result of Menopause.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) and other forms of treatment replace hormones that the body stops producing during and after Menopause.

Other causes of Menopause:

Apart from age, Menopause can also be caused by the following:

  • Hysterectomy. This is an operation done to remove the uterus. When the uterus is removed, it usually doesn't result in immediate Menopause. However, when a total hysterectomy is done (where both the uterus and ovaries are removed), there are no eggs produced causing Menopause.
  • Chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Such cancer therapies cause temporary infertility and halts menstruation. After treatment, one can experience Menopause symptoms like hot flushes.
  • Primary ovarian insufficiency. This happens when ovaries do not produce the correct levels of hormones, causing premature Menopause. This condition is often genetic or caused by autoimmune disease.
  • Decline in production of reproductive hormones. As one gets older, ovaries produce less estrogen and progesterone. This causes a decline in fertility.

Complications caused by Menopause:

  • Heart and cardiovascular disease. The risk of getting cardiovascular disease increases with a decline in estrogen levels in the body. It is therefore important for women approaching Menopause to do regular exercises and eat healthy to maintain a good BMI. They should also visit their doctor for regular checkups.
  • Sexual dysfunction. It occurs as a result of vaginal dryness that causes discomfort or bleeding during intercourse. Menopause also causes a decrease in sexual desire. Luckily, this issue can be solved by the use of lubricants, and vaginal moisturisers.
  • Osteoporosis. This is a condition that causes bones to become weak, making them more prone to fractures. This explains why older women are prone to spine, wrist, and spine fractures.
  • Urinary incontinence. Most women at their Postmenopause stage tend to lose elasticity in their vagina and urethra. The condition is characterized by a sudden strong urge to pee or pass urine while coughing or laughing. Performing exercises on a regular basis and using vaginal estrogen helps strengthen pelvic floor muscles.
  • Weight gain. During the menopausal transition, body metabolism slows down, leading to an increase in weight. It is vital to keep fit and eat healthy to maintain a healthy weight.

HERBS EVERY WOMAN SHOULD TAKE

When should you see a doctor?

Menopause symptoms present themselves differently in every woman. Some might get severe symptoms, while others get mild ones. According to recent studies, overweight and smoking women are much more likely to get critical, long-lasting symptoms than others. If your symptoms bother you, it is important to see a doctor immediately.

Menopause treatment and relief:

Depending on the severity, Menopause can be treated by hormonal or non-hormonal methods (also known as Naturopath Menopause treatment). Non-hormonal methods include lifestyle alterations, diet modification, and over the counter therapies, while hormonal methods involve the use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Naturopath Menopause treatment also involves use of herbal teas and natural juices.

  • It gives a balance in moods
  • It helps in relieving adrenal fatigue
  • It strengthens the uterine walls, lessening heavy periods and cramps
  • It balances reproductive hormones.

Use of natural juices:

What juices help for Menopause? Beet and carrot juices are known to be powerful remedies for circulation and inflammation. A mixture of pomegranate juice is also a common reliever of hot flushes. More research needs to be done to establish what juices help for menopause.

Dietary alterations:

Proper nutrition can help alleviate Menopausal symptoms. Below are some of the nutrients that you can incorporate into your diet;

  • Calcium. Eat or drink at least four servings of dairy products in a day. If you are not a fan of dairies, you can eat fish, legumes, and broccoli instead. The aim is to feed your body with 1200 milligrams of calcium in a day.
  • Iron. Older women need at least 8 milligrams of iron in a day. You can help yourself to food such as red meat, eggs, fish, green vegetables, and poultry to boost your body's iron levels.
  • Fiber. Foods such as cereals, whole-grains, fresh fruits, pasta, and rice are rich in fiber. Take at least 21 grams of fiber in a day for a healthier body.

It is essential for women in their Menopause stage to maintain a healthy weight by cutting back on food rich in fat. Saturated fat in the body increases the risk of getting a heart disease. Limit the intake of foods such as cheese, fatty meats, and whole milk. It is also required that salt and sugar are taken in moderation to reduce the risk of getting high blood pressure. Avoid spicy foods, alcohol, and caffeine since they can trigger hot flushes.

Use Of Natural Supplements:

Low levels of estrogen in the body are linked to the development of Osteoporosis. Calcium and vitamin D supplements can help prevent this condition from happening. People who are at the age of 51 to 70 should get an average of 600 IU of vitamin D each day, while those above 70 should get 800 IU. However, it is important to check with your doctor before taking any of these supplements because too much of it can cause heart attack and kidney diseases. For vitamin supplements, check out Fusion Menopause. Fusion Menopause is a Menopause vitamin supplement and is very different to Menopause tea.
